Eye-Opening Perspectives: A Disability Awareness Conference

On Saturday, March 28th, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is hosting its first annual Disability Awareness Conference. This conference is designed to raise awareness on campus on various Deaf and disability-related issues, from historical perspectives on disability to current events. This FREE event is open to everyone. Organizations involved in the conference include the McBurney Speakers Bureau, Accessibility Advocates, Sex Out Loud, Wisconsin Union Directorate Film Committee and WSUM Radio.

    Program Descriptions

    Deaf Culture Panel

    This panel discussion will focus on various aspects of Deaf culture over time. We'll also be discussing cultural differences, similarities and issues of assimilation with the hearing world.

    International Perspectives of Disability

    This panel will discuss other countries and their laws and attitudes towards issues of disabilities, facilitated by international students as well as people with experiences in other countries. Come join us for an educational and interesting talk about the lives of people with disabilities in other countries as compared to experiences in the United States.

    Sex and Disability Workshop

    This interactive workshop, prepared and presented by Sex Out Loud, will discuss sexual representations of people with disabilities, issues of communication around sex and disability, and practical tips for accommodating various disabilities and pleasure.

    Historical Perspectives

    This interactive session will address the historical oppression of people with disabilities, including the intersection of disability with race, class, gender, and ethnicity. We will also talk about resistance to oppression and disability pride.

    Disability and the Media

    Join us as we watch and discuss clips from movies and television that portray disabilities in various ways. This workshop will be a fun and interactive way to learn about cultural and media representations of disability.

    Rep. Tammy Baldwin, Keynote Speaker

    Representative Tammy Baldwin is the representative to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 2nd Congressional District of Wisconsin. She will be speaking about disability-related legislation and current events and answering questions from the audience.

    Film Showing: "Murderball"

    "Murderball" is an intense and thrilling documentary about the sport of Wheelchair Rugby. The movie follows the United States team as they prepare for the world championships and the renewal of a heated rivalry with Canada.

    Registration

    Registration is now closed. Participants who registered by the March 23 deadline should have received a confirmation email.

    Locations and Parking

    Conference events from noon to 6:00 pm take place in Grainger Hall on the UW-Madison campus. Grainger Hall is located at 975 University Avenue. For parking locations, please see UW-Madison's Transportation Services Web Site and Grainger Hall's Web Site.

    The film "Murderball" will be shown at the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) Satellite, located at 717 W. Johnson Street on the UW-Madison campus. It is in the Gordon Commons complex; the MSC Satellite entrance is on Lake Street under the bridge (across the street from Witte, the UW Housing Dorm). Parking is available on the street and in the Lake Street Parking Garage. The website for the MSC Satellite is http://www.housing.wisc.edu/diversity/satellite.php.

    Accessibility Information

    Accommodations, including sign language interpreting, may be requested during the registration process. Accommodation requests must be made before the registration process closes on March 23.
