Technology Support Specialist - Student Hourly Position

OVERVIEW OF DUTIES:

The Technology Support Specialist is a generalist position that helps the Center with a wide range of technology services and support: 1) web development projects, including templates, CSS, accessibility tuning, and transforming content for web presentation 2) technical support projects including installation, troubleshooting, documentation, training, and finding innovative technology solutions 3) database development and maintenance, as well as creation of effective queries 4) assistance with digital video production and editing and 5) related administrative tasks. The Technology Support Specialist reports to the Assistant Director, but will also work directly with the Adaptive Technology Specialist on specific projects.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work cooperatively with other IT support staff to resolve problems, apply emergency patches, etc.
  2. Resolve problems with hardware and software used to provide real time captioning and other accommodations for deaf and hard of hearing students.
  3. Resolve problems with scanning and OCR software.
  4. Provide reports on the status of projects and activities of the department's IT users.
  5. Assist the supervisor in providing notice and training to users on new or modified procedures and/or software and hardware used by department IT users.
  6. Conduct special projects as directed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current UW-Madison undergraduate or graduate student status
  2. Relevant coursework and/or experience
  3. Excellent time management and organization skills
  4. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  5. Writing and editing skills or experience
  6. Constant attention to accuracy and detail
  7. Creative problem solving skills
  8. Two-year availability

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Knowledge of database systems, especially Microsoft Access
  2. Knowledge of web accessibility standards, XHTML, CSS, PHP
  3. Experience with video editing software
  4. Experience with scanning software/hardware
  5. Willingness to work summers

SALARY:

$8.00 - $15.00/ hour (depending upon qualifications) for 8-18 hours per week.
